Overview

The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and the Farmington River Trail are part of an 81-mile shared-use pathway stretching from New Haven, Connecticut, to Northampton, Massachusetts. The corridor is already about 80% complete and is expected to be fully connected within the next five to six years. The trail network links town centers, neighborhoods, natural landscapes, and major destinations, offering residents a safe and scenic walking, running, and cycling route.

The Enclave at the Farmington River is planned to integrate with this trail system, providing convenient public access and supporting long-term community connectivity along the Farmington River.

Economic Impact

An economic impact analysis conducted by Cambridge Econometrics highlights several key benefits associated with completing the regional trail system:

Millions in new visitor spending expected each year

Hundreds of jobs supported throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts

Higher property values in neighborhoods located near the trail

• Increased visitation to local businesses, restaurants, and recreation areas

• Strengthened regional connectivity through the East Coast Greenway corridor

The analysis also notes that existing trail segments already attract an estimated 800,000 users annually, a number that is projected to nearly double once the trail is fully completed.

Community Benefits

Beyond economic growth, the trail improvements would offer long-term quality-of-life benefits across the region:

• Expanded public access to outdoor recreation

• Improved walkability and alternative transportation options

• Increased visibility and activity for nearby businesses

• Enhanced environmental stewardship through protected buffer areas

• Stronger community engagement with the Farmington River corridor

Summary

The completion of the New Haven-to-Massachusetts trail represents a major investment in recreation, transportation, and regional development. As plans continue to advance, the Farmington River Trail connection adjacent to The Enclave will play a meaningful role in supporting economic vitality and offering new opportunities for residents, visitors, and the surrounding community.
